Monthly Mayhem - November

A monthly writing competition hosted by The Creatives Journal. The competition will open on the 1st and submissions close on the 21st of each month. The winner of each monthly competition will be announced on the last day of the month.

The winning story will get printed and hand-bound before being posted to the winner. The story will be published on The Creatives Journal. The winner will also receive a free Author Profile for 1 year. (Total prize value $80).

How it works:

Write a Fiction short story between 1,000 and 2,000 words on the theme The Future of... Submit your story between Sunday 1 November and Saturday 21 November. Emailed, posted or late entries will not be accepted.

Terms and Conditions

  • This is a writing competition held by The Creatives Journal. 

  • Information on how to enter and prizes form part of these Terms and Conditions. 

  • Participation in this competition is deemed acceptance of these Terms and Conditions.

  • By entering the competition you are agreeing to subscribe to The Creatives Journal mailing list.

  • Entry must be in English and is open to entrants worldwide aged 17 years and over. 

  • The Creatives Journal employees and the immediate family members of such employees are ineligible to enter. Immediate family means any of the following: spouse, ex-spouse, de-facto spouse, child or step-child (whether by natural or by adoption), parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, uncle, aunt, niece, nephew, brother, sister, step-brother, or step-sister.

  • The competition is FREE to enter. Any other costs associated with accessing the competition (e.g. Internet access charges) are the entrant’s responsibility.

  • The competition is a game of skill in which chance plays no part in determining the winners.

  • The competition commences at 9am AEST, Sunday 1 November 2020 and closes at 11.59.59pm AEST Saturday 21 November 2020 (“the competition period”).

  • The winner will be announced Monday 30 November 2020.

  • To enter, entrants must complete the Entry Form above, including the required details, and submit their story within the word limit during the competition period. Emailed, posted or late entries will not be accepted.

  • Any material deemed defamatory, racist, overly sexual or otherwise illegal or offending will be disqualified.

  • The entered story must be between 1000 and 2000 words and adhere to the defined challenge criteria. Stories must be the original work of the entrant, and previously unpublished. Once an entry has been submitted, it is final and cannot be withdrawn or edited by the entrant. 

  • Only one entry permitted per person per month.

  • Copyright is retained by the author at all times. By entering this competition, all entrants grant permission for their story to be published (along with their name/pen name) on The Creatives Journal website, newsletter and social media platforms.

  • The winning author receives the following: The winning story will get printed and hand-bound before being posted to the winner. The story will be published on The Creatives Journal. The winner will also receive a free Author Profile for 1 year. (Total prize value $80). 

  • The winning author grants The Creatives Journal exclusive rights to publish their winning entry on The Creatives Journal website.

  • The winning author grants The Creatives Journal exclusive rights to publish their winning entry in any future anthology of stories. There is no additional payment beyond the prize.

  • The second and third place winners (“shortlisted entries”) will also be published on The Creatives Journal.

  • The second and third place authors grant The Creatives Journal exclusive rights to publish their entries The Creatives Journal website. 

  • The second and third place authors grant The Creatives Journal exclusive rights to publish their entries in any future anthology of stories. There is no additional payment beyond the prize.

  • The judging takes place 8 days after the submission closing date. 

  • There is a minimum of five (5) entries required for this competition to be held and judged.  

  • An announcement of the winner and shortlisted entries will be sent to The Creatives Journal email list. 

  • The winner and any shortlisted entrants will be contacted by email in the two days that follow.

  • The winner will be announced on The Creatives Journal Social media on Monday 30 November 2020.

  • Second place will be announced on The Creatives Journal Social media on Wednesday 2 December 2020.

  • Third place will be announced on The Creatives Journal Social media on Thursday 3 December 2020.

  • The Creatives Journal decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. 

  • Incomplete or indecipherable entries will be deemed invalid.

  • The winning authors agree not to enter the winning entry into any future competition.

  • Authors guarantee that they are the original copyright holder of the work in question, and own the legal rights to use the information. As such, we have no legal liability regarding any copyright claims, but will simply remove offending articles as/when we are advised of any breaches.

  • By submitting materials, you grant us an exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free, worldwide license to republish any material you submit to us in any format, including without limitation print and electronic format. In particular, you agree that we can make it available in this Blog as well as in any other The Creatives Journal publications and/or media or social media, provided that due credit is given to the author.

  • Two weeks after the original decision has been made, if the winner cannot be contacted, the unclaimed prize will be awarded to the next best entry as judged by The Creatives Journal.

  • The Creatives Journal reserves the right, at any time, to verify the validity of entries and entrants (including an entrant’s identity and place of residence) and to disqualify any entrant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these Terms and Conditions or who tampers with the entry process. Failure by The Creatives Journal to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.

  • If this competition is interfered with in any way or is not capable of being conducted as reasonably anticipated due to any reason beyond the reasonable control of The Creatives Journal, The Creatives Journal reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to the fullest extent permitted by law (a) to disqualify any entrant; or (b) subject to any written directions from a regulatory authority, to modify, suspend, terminate or cancel the competition, as appropriate.

  • Except for any liability that cannot be excluded by law, The Creatives Journal (including its officers, employees and agents) excludes all liability (including negligence), for any personal injury; or any loss or damage (including loss of opportunity); whether direct, indirect, special or consequential, arising in any way out of the competition, including, but not limited to, where arising out of the following: (a) any technical difficulties or equipment malfunction (whether or not under The Creatives Journal’s control); (b) any theft, unauthorised access or third party interference; (c) any entry or prize claim that is late, lost, altered, damaged or misdirected (whether or not after their receipt by The Creatives Journal) due to any reason beyond the reasonable control of The Creatives Journal; (d) any variation in prize value to that stated in these Terms and Conditions; (e) any tax liability incurred by a winner or entrant; or (f) use of a prize.

  • The Creatives Journal collects personal information in order to conduct the competition and will never disclose this information to a 3rd party. The Creatives Journal may, for an indefinite period unless otherwise advised, use the information for its own promotional, marketing and publicity purposes including sending electronic messages or telephoning the entrant. Entrants should direct any request to access, update or correct information to The Creatives Journal.

  • These Terms and Conditions are subject to change at any time without notice.
